One of the attractively laid out villages built by 18th century landlords, the roots of the community extend back to the early Christian era. An early monastery stood on the site of the present Church of Ireland where an unusual pyramid-shaped mausoleum dominates the graveyard at the rear. A 10th century high cross was removed in the early 19th century and re-located on the terrace of the Kinnitty Castle manor.
